Digby Jones, Lord Jones of Birmingham and Minister of State for Trade and Investment of the UK, visited Mexico, 28-30 May 2008.
Lord Jones visited Mexico from the 28th to the 30th May 2008. He spoke at the "Club de Industriales" on Thursday 29 May at a lunch in front of an audience of Mexican businessmen about the importance of UK Mexico relations. On the 30th, he spoke about the London Stock Exchange and the UK as an investment destination, with the example of Fresnillo, the first Mexican Company to list on the LSE at a breakfast held at the Four Seasons hotel. Lord Jones celebrated the placing of Fresnillo Plc, a subsidiary of the mining company Peñoles, on the London Stock Exchange, whose conditional quotation starts/started on April 11, subject to an internal process of the LSE, which had now been concluded. Fresnillo Plc shares are under the inscription "Fres" in the National Stock Registry Office (BMV). Later that same day, he addressed trade relations between Mexico and UK, opportunities for collaboration on PPP's and the future 2012 Olympics in London in an Infrastructure seminar. At this last event, he stated that the UK is looking for business opportunities in Mexico and that the UK plans to have an active role in the "Plan Nacional de Infraestructura", during the present government with Calderón that manages 250 thousand million US dollars and which will be financed by the private sector. He mentioned the UK architects and consultants who are working on building the Olympic stadium and Olympic swimming pool, as well as airports in New Delhi and Madrid, and the metro in Dubai, among other big infrastructures. Nevertheless Lord Jones clarified that those involved are the designers, management supervisors and architects and not the actual constructors of the projects. This, he stated, would be a great compliment for local Mexican companies in these industries.
